• Less workload from re-work, double-checking etc.
• Clarity in expectations, processes, and roles
• More headspace for specialized nurses
• Ready to start digitization project
Our healthcare system is seriously strained. The gastroenterological clinic of Amsterdam’s city hospital OLVG is no exception. There’s simply too much work for too little people. Can Been Management Consulting help ease the workload of specialized nurses?
To reduce the workload for its specialized nurses, the hospital’s gastroenterologists want to set up a digital clinic for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. If there’s more self-service and smart monitoring, patients could drastically reduce the number of hospital visits. And thus, the nurses’ workload. But do how you make time for a digital project when everyone’s already super busy?
Unraveling the process
The gastroenterologist who leads the clinic’s transition, asks for help. How can we create more headspace and less workload for the nurses? We start with a short series of workshops. In the first workshop, we unravel the current processes for patients with inflammatory bowel diseases. We take a big brown paper and draw a big process chart together with the team. What do you do? Where does it come from? Where does it go?
From the clarity of the process comes a clear mind.

Redesigning with LEAN
It turns out, there’s a lot of work in double-checking each other’s work whenever nurses change shifts. Via IT systems, mail, face to face. Nurses may look at the same issue four times. In the next workshops, we look for solutions to recurring issues and design the whole process using the LEAN process methodology. It results in a transparent, comprehensible, and clear process for everyone involved.
Headspace for nurses
And indeed: from the clarity of the process comes a clear mind. The nurses already feel less stressed. Once the clinic has made some adjustments to its IT systems, it can free up more time. And then It can finally start its next project: the digital clinic.
