From football to food. Thomas Dinjens transferred from AFC Ajax to our Food Transition team. What consulting experience does he bring along? Why choose us? And what is his appetite for the food transition? Let’s meet Thomas.
What is your background?
Where to start? After my studies in Public and Business Administration in Amsterdam, I started my career as a consultant. I worked for an international consultancy called Korn Ferry for seven years. I worked on international projects, mostly in the food industry. Helping major supermarkets, global beer brands, and big dairy producers.
What types of projects did you work on?
Many projects were on the brink of strategy and HR. For instance, a performance improvement project for a distribution center of an international retailer, focused on increasing employee satisfaction and productivity. For a global beer brewer, I worked on the development of new organizational blueprints and jobs.
"I’ve been following Been Management Consulting for a while. Its way of working appeals to me."
Thomas Dinjens, food transition expert
Can you tell a bit about your previous employer, AFC Ajax?
Of course! After working as a consultant for so long, I wanted to know what it’s like to work in one company. Then, this opportunity came to join AFC Ajax’s strategy team. I’m a huge football and Ajax fan. So, this was an opportunity I didn’t want to miss out on.
We get you, Thomas! What was your role there?
My role was to contribute to the development and implementation of the club’s strategy and multi-year plans, together with the management team and my Strategy team members. In addition, I was responsible for leading strategic projects such as the development of Ajax’ CSR strategy. Together with the project team we set objectives that are in line with the UN’s SDGs . We also developed a strategic plan and roadmap towards 2030. Of course, I am curious what will come of the plans, since I’m still an Ajax fan. I believe the football industry can positively influence fans around the world.
Sounds great. So, why leave?
After two years, I missed the dynamics of consultancy. Also, I wanted to pursue another passion of mine: food. I love to cook, eat, and enjoy a glass of wine. I’m also a member of the Slow Food Youth Network. It’s an international network of young professionals who want to change the food system. Here, I followed an educational program about our food system, called the Slow Food Youth Academy. Visiting biological farms, but also bio-industry farms, seaweed farms, slaughterhouses, ports. That’s when I realized: I want to work on changing the food system too.
Why choose us?
I wanted to work for a smaller consultancy with lots of entrepreneurship and an informal culture. I’ve been following Been Management Consulting for a while. Its way of working appeals to me: working at the intersection of strategy, organization, and people. I believe this is key for achieving sustainable impact. Also, Been does great work in the Food Transition. Meeting the team was lovely. We’re all motivated to work on a sustainable food system. To have a positive impact through our consulting work.
Indeed! How about your personal life? What does that look like?
I live in Utrecht with my wife Willemijn. I love to cook, drink and enjoy life. Also, I still play football. Food & football. That’s my life, haha.
