Matthijs brings experience in strategy & operations consulting and project management. Having worked for at Deloitte for almost 5 years, he was eager to focus fully on sustainability, impact projects and food transition, contributing to a better tomorrow. But what made him apply to Been? What can we expect from Matthijs? And what are his first impressions?
What is your background?
I am a driven and globally minded professional with a background in Business Administration, specializing in Entrepreneurship and Strategy. With a strong academic foundation, I bring a strategic perspective to business challenges and a passion for innovation and sustainable growth.
Next to studying, I found it important to develop myself in different areas. And so, my experiences extend beyond the classroom into impactful volunteer work across India, Uganda, and Egypt. These international roles have shaped my worldview, strengthened my adaptability, and deepened my commitment to social impact and cross-cultural collaboration. Whether supporting local initiatives or contributing to strategic projects, I am guided by my belief in the power of business to drive meaningful change.
What made you decide to apply at Been Management Consulting?
I decided to apply to Been Management Consulting because I was seeking work that felt more meaningful - projects where I could see the impact of my efforts and contribute to something larger than just commercial success. Been’s focus on sustainability, and its commitment to helping organizations grow while doing good, strongly resonated with me.
The opportunity to work in the food sector was also a major draw. It's a space where systemic change is both urgently needed and incredibly rewarding. I was excited by the chance to contribute to projects that not only solve complex challenges but also promote healthier, more sustainable food systems.
Lastly, the size and structure of Been appealed to me. I was looking to be part of a smaller, close-knit team where I could learn quickly, contribute meaningfully, and be surrounded by people who share the same values. Joining a firm that blends strategic thinking with purpose felt like a natural next step in my career.
“Creating a better tomorrow through the implementation of sustainable solutions”
Matthijs van Gaalen, Food Transition Consultant
What can we expect from you here at Been Management Consulting and how do you want to contribute to the food transition?
Been MC can expect a critical and analytical thinker who combines strategic insight with a deep commitment to sustainable change. My background in operational strategy and process optimization equips me to identify inefficiencies, design practical solutions, and help organizations implement meaningful improvements. I bring a structured mindset, but also a strong belief that strategy should serve a broader purpose—especially in today’s fast-changing world.
I'm particularly passionate about sustainable propositions and see the food system as one of the most impactful areas for transformation. That’s why I actively joined the Slow Food Youth Network: to immerse myself further in the dynamics of the food transition, engage with changemakers on the ground, and bring those insights and energy back to my work at Been.
By connecting my consulting experience with a hands-on understanding of the food ecosystem, I aim to bridge strategic thinking with real-world action—supporting clients in building sustainable business models that are both future-proof and values-driven.
How would you describe the working atmosphere?
The working atmosphere at Been feels personal, collaborative, and grounded in trust. Because the company is relatively small, there’s a strong sense of connection across the team—you’re not just a name or a role, but a person whose ideas and input truly matter. That creates an open environment where people support one another, share knowledge, and work together toward common goals.
Can you tell us a little bit about your personal life? Which hobbies or interests outside work energize you?
I live in Amsterdam, a city I really enjoy! Outside of work, staying active is a big part of my life - I love playing sports like hockey, tennis, and hitting the gym. Whenever I can, I also try to get out on the water to go kitesurfing, which has become a real passion.
Being outdoors in general gives me energy, whether it's going for a run, a bike ride, or just spending time in nature. I'm also a big fan of good food - both cooking and going to the newest restaurants. I find a lot of joy in preparing meals, trying new recipes, and sharing them with friends. For me, it’s a great way to unwind and connect with others.
