Been Management Consulting reaches an important milestone in its sustainable mission. We’ve been officially certified as B Corp – hurray! We’re officially a for-profit company that uses the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. In becoming a B Corp, we’re part of a global movement of doing-business-for-good companies, such as Ben & Jerry’s, Patagonia and Coursera. Why is this such a major milestone for us? And what can others learn from our journey?
Meeting high sustainability standards
As a B Corp, we meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. B Corp Certification is a highly selective status. The certification process uses credible, comprehensive, transparent, and independent standards of social and environmental performance. Roel Beentjes, managing partner of Been Management Consulting, on why adopting this standard is so important: “We want to drive positive changes in organizations to improve their social and environmental impact. In 2019, we embarked on our mission to let 100% of our projects have such a positive impact by 2024. Becoming a B Corp contributes to this mission.”
A holistic approach
To become a B Corp the company’s performance is measured in five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. Esther Eijkemans, the consultant in charge of the certification process: “These five categories stand for sustainability in the broadest sense. It goes beyond reducing our own CO2 footprint, taking all aspects of ‘doing good’ into account. This aligns with our own thinking at Been Management Consulting, always taking a holistic approach.”

Our own transformational journey
In meeting those high standards, we entered our own transformation process, taking our own methodology at hand. Esther explains: “In 2019, we started by increasing our knowledge and understanding of sustainability, interviewing experts, and taking courses. Next, we engaged with a new ecosystem of leaders and partners in sustainability, e.g. through our Xpedition to the Source. Also, we believe small actions make big waves, so the next step was to change our behavior and mindset via micro actions. Small adjustments that are daily reminder of our mission. The final step was to redefine the way we measure impact improvement in our client projects.”
In good company
With the certification in place, we can officially say we’re in good company. There are over 4,000 B Corps in 153 industries and 77 countries around the world. And counting. There are many well-known Dutch B Corps, such as Fair Phone, Tony's Chocolonely, Triodos Bank, We Transfer, Auping, Dopper, Ace & Tate, and Snappcar.
Helping others in their transformation
Roel adds: “We all have one unifying goal: to redefine success in business. We love helping companies throughout this transformational journey too. This is where B Corp Way comes in; a community of experienced B Corps that help other companies in their change. We’re glad to announce that we’re also an official B Corp Way partner, guiding companies in their systemic change.”
