Our client, a company in the Dutch utilities sector, faced a crucial moment: they had been experiencing growth over the past years and now sought to determine the potential for future strategic growth. The challenge was to bring an outside perspective and generate insights into an opaque market environment driven by (inter)national regulation, while maintaining the client’s core focus on societal impact.
How did we help?
Together with the client, we co-created the value case outlining the strategic growth potential based on internal core capabilities and external (market) trends and opportunities. To support the client in setting up the value case, we employed the approach below.
1. Research & Market Opportunities
We gathered existing internal knowledge from employees (inside-out) and complemented this with external market insights (outside-in) from experts and desk research. Next, we identified relevant market opportunities for growth in the complex market environment and competitive landscape.

2. Growth strategy scenarios
We provided three possible strategic growth scenarios, each with its own market opportunities, organizational design, and strategic positioning. The recommendation was based on a multi-value model assessing financial costs and benefits, organizational fit, internal implications for personnel and assets, and legal and societal impact.
3. Value case for Board of Directors
We created a value case outlining the strategic growth potential of the utilities company based on three scenarios. This included an assessment of the expected costs and returns using a multi-value model. We translated these insights into a presentation for the Board of Directors, enabling them to make informed decisions about the company's future growth.
