In global markets, farmers’ products are often treated as interchangeable commodities — yielding low margins and offering little recognition for the true value created on the farm. In response, we worked with a farmers’ cooperative to rethink their business approach and identify new ways to create more value for their members.
Drive value and reduce carbon through innovation
Together with our client’s multidisciplinary team, we embarked on a full innovation journey — successfully navigating all key phases, from insight generation and problem exploration to implementation and commercialization.
The focus was on understanding the needs of buyers of primary agricultural products — not end consumers, but processors and retailers acting as intermediaries. Decarbonization is high on their agenda, and since most emissions in food production occur at the farm level, farmers play a crucial role in reducing carbon.
Working closely with the project team, we developed a product concept that significantly lowers the CO₂e footprint of meat. We then piloted the concept with several farmers. Encouraged by the results, we moved forward with the commercial launch — bringing together supply chain partners from farm to shelf.
Successful launch in the food market – a milestone we're proud of
The low-carbon concept was successfully launched in the food market. Farmers received a higher price for their products, enabling further investment in decarbonization. The success brought strong recognition and positive attention to both the farmers and the cooperative. Since then, decarbonization has become a strategic priority for the cooperative, with a strong focus in both R&D and commercial programs.
Let's change the system
“Carbon reduction in food supply chains can only be achieved through collaboration from farm to fork. It takes strong leadership and the willingness to tackle complex challenge. And when successful, it delivers significant value for all stakeholders across the chain.”
