B Corp closely aligns with Vesteda’s strategy: Housing as a Force for Good. Frans Baas (Corporate Treasurer) explains: “As an institutional residential investor and landlord, we aim to demonstrate that housing can be offered responsibly, taking into account all stakeholders: from shareholders and employees to tenants, suppliers, and society at large. The fact that this is objectively assessed through an internationally recognized standard makes B Corp certification highly valuable.”
At the same time, B Corp fully reflects the belief that societal impact and financial performance reinforce each other. It is precisely by being financially healthy that Vesteda can operate sustainably and create long-term value.
Thanks to its strong ESG foundation, Vesteda was able to substantiate its impact without major changes to policies or ways of working. However, the certification process was intensive due to the size of the assessment with more than 200 questions, the volume of supporting evidence required, the overall lead time, and shifting timelines. At times, the process became even more complex due to periods of uncertainty during the audit.
It is also essential to involve stakeholders early on. Not everyone immediately sees the added value of B Corp, and questions may arise about its impact on strategy and returns. By engaging in these discussions at an early stage, support is built and it becomes clear that B Corp can actually contribute to further professionalization and long-term resilience.
“This intensity and the need to manage expectations internally proved to be the biggest challenge,” says Frans Baas. “For organizations pursuing B Corp certification: do not underestimate the process.”
At the same time, it provided strong confidence that Vesteda’s existing ways of working are well aligned with the B Corp requirements. As Frans Baas notes: “This confirms that we are not only on the right track internally, but externally as well.”
The certification also provides momentum to take further steps. Vesteda is already active on themes such as CO₂ reduction, sustainable housing, and tenant satisfaction. B Corp helps to strengthen and sharpen the positioning of these initiatives.
Frans Baas: “We are also seeing that sustainability is becoming more tangible within our organization as a result of B Corp certification. Employees actively think about how they can contribute to our mission from their own roles. A small example is how our IT department explored a more social and sustainable destination for decommissioned laptops; refurbishing them so they can benefit families in need. Initiatives like these show that B Corp also creates internal momentum.”
In addition, it strengthens employees’ sense of pride. This is particularly important for younger employees, who want to work for an organization with a clear purpose. In that sense, B Corp also supports attracting and retaining talent. Vesteda also sees opportunities to further leverage this value, for example by investing more in communication and strengthening connections with the B Corp community.
For Vesteda, B Corp is both a confirmation and a catalyst. It shows that the organization is already doing many things well, while at the same time encouraging continuous improvement. B Corp is therefore not an endpoint, but a new starting point: a foundation for building, together with employees, partners, and stakeholders, an organization that structurally creates both societal and financial value.
Frans Baas: “Been Management Consulting played an important role in guiding the process. By making the process clear and translating it into practical actions, their support helped us effectively collect answers and evidence. In addition, Been contributed to safeguarding both progress and quality. By taking a critical view and aligning regularly, the process kept moving forward and the content was strengthened, resulting in a well-substantiated final outcome and our certification.”
