FOOD TRANSITION

The world faces a major challenge: by 2050, we will need to feed more than 10 billion people without causing additional damage to the climate and nature, while also ensuring fair opportunities for producers and communities.

From challenge to sustainable food transition

This calls for a systemic change, a food system that uses raw materials efficiently, has a lower environmental impact, and creates value for producers, consumers, and society. For organizations, this means making choices. How do we adapt to a changing climate, reduce our impact, and build circular supply chains?

Changing legislation, a growing demand for transparency, and the need for flexible, stable value chains make this transition urgent. The transition to a sustainable system is necessary and offers opportunities for growth and leadership.

Strategy | Ambition

The food system is changing. The food transition requires a fundamental shift to a system that is more sustainable, healthier, and fairer.

The challenge

The food system is changing. The food transition requires a fundamental change to a system that is more sustainable, healthier and fairer.
These challenges are rapidly affecting all players in the food system. Organizations need to be agile to not only be able to respond, but also to anticipate the challenges of the future.
This is not self-evident: existing structures, investments and processes are focused on short-term results and efficiency, which makes investing in the future difficult.
Balancing economic security on the one hand and flexibility to look ahead is a strategic imperative.

Building Coalitions
Bringing value chain partners together to manage the complexity of change and transition: successful transitions arise from collaboration based on shared values, ambitions and goals

The challenge

Despite the urgency of the food transition, uncertainty, scarcity and necessary investments are causing delays.
Uncertainty is increasing due to the lack of consistent ESG policies at national and European level, and the (trade) wars caused by geopolitical tensions. Scarcity of energy, water, labor and raw materials pose a threat to global supply chains. Sustainability and innovation require investments, while the system is characterized by low margins and a race-to-the-bottom.
A systemic approach and moving from single to integrated steering on multiple values is crucial to meet these challenges.

Our solutions

The challenge

The food transition requires more than strategic choices and structural adjustments. Organizations in the food sector need to fundamentally reinvent themselves, especially in culture.

A culture of collaboration and continuous learning and improvement is essential, but not self-evident.

The power to change must be built up. This requires strong leadership, employees who are supported in their growth and development, improving cooperation and taking responsibility.
