This fall, energetic Pieter Minnee finished his traineeship. After two years helping companies transition to a more sustainable energy system, he’s ready for the next step. A career as consultant in the energy transition at Been Management Consulting. What makes the energy transition so exciting? And how does Pieter want to contribute? Let’s meet Pieter Minnee.
Welcome, Pieter. Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
Sure! I studied Business at Groningen University and specialized in Operations & Supply Chain Management. I’m fascinated by improvement and change projects with multiple stakeholders. While studying for my Master’s degree my passion for sustainability and the energy transition was ignited. As an intern I explored how a hydrogen pipeline can be efficiently exploited at the port of Delfzijl. It’s an exciting topic. Hydrogen could play a very important part in creating a sustainable energy system. It offers a steady supply of energy next to volatile renewables like sun and wind power.
You also just finished an energy traineeship, can you tell us more about that?
Yes, the National Energy Traineeship here in The Netherlands. As trainees we set out to help small and medium enterprises form a sustainability strategy. We also helped with the execution of those strategies. As you may expect, the energy transition plays a big part in those strategies. I helped companies in the manufacturing, the construction, and the governmental sector. Providing the opportunity to explore different industries.
"What resonates with me, is that Been is a B Corp."
Pieter Minnee, energy transition consultant
What can we expect from you here at Been Management Consulting?
Well, I’ll bring along my experiences and contacts in the energy sector, and my personality – of course. I’m flexible and resilient person, which makes me feel at ease in new situations. I’m a very curious and love learning new things. I love learning from others, too. What I like most is to work with different stakeholders and making the right choices together.
These are excellent qualities for a consultant, Pieter. Tell us, why did you choose us?
I think it’s important to focus on the long term. Been Management Consulting helps companies with a full package: strategy, performance, and transformation. This allows me to grow and learn too. What also resonates with me, is that Been is a B Corp. It means we always take all stakeholders’ interests into account, not just our clients.
How about the UN’s sustainable development goals? Which goal appeals to you most, professionally and personally?
It’s so hard to choose. Can I pick three goals? My top three would be SDG 7 (affordable and sustainable energy), SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production), and SDG 13 (climate action). Making sustainable energy affordable ensures everyone can profit from a resource that used to be expensive and polluting. By working on the transition to a sustainable energy system, we want everyone to have access to clean energy sources. A win-win!
Consumption needs to become a circular system, not a linear one. I already apply this to my daily life. I reduce waste and I recycle and share products. When fewer goods are produced this will curb energy consumption too. I’d love to help companies to create a new vision on circularity and to cooperate with their partners in the value chain.
Everyone can contribute to solving the climate puzzle. I work a as a volunteer at Jong RES (youth representatives for regional energy strategies, ed.) and try to make young people aware of the influence they can have on the climate action. Regardless of their education, background, or experience.
That’s very aspirational Pieter. How do you relax?
I love playing sports: tennis, running, field hockey, and squash. In the weekends I like make home-made curries for my girlfriend, family, and friends. I also like taking adventurous trips. Taking the train across Europe or discovering new countries to hike or deep dive. Exploring new places and learning about local customs and habits fascinates me. It’s a way of making new friends and acquaintances too.
What are the things you value most in life?
Well, my core values are integrity, justice, and kindness. Trusting each other and building long-term relationships is very important to me. Moving forward together. That’s what motivates me in my personal and professional life.
