Annemarie Geerdes has a track record of more than twenty years in Agri Food. Why did she choose for Been Management Consulting? What can we expect from her and what is her vision for the food transition?
What is your background?
I live in Zeist with my partner Martijn and our two children, Teun and Sanne. After completing my studies in Business Economics in Tilburg, I worked for Ahold Delhaize for 18 years in various roles. Five years ago, I made the switch to consulting. I believe companies are key to driving the shift towards a more sustainable food system. Now, more than ever, we must take responsibility for the social and ecological impact of production across the entire value chain. What drives me is how we can accelerate this transition together.
You have held various positions at Albert Heijn, how have you developed?
I started at Albert Heijn in 2002 as Financial Controller. I quickly realized that figures form the basis for almost every decision. In subsequent roles at Albert Heijn, I was given commercial responsibility for various product categories and the expansion of Albert Heijn to Belgium. My interest in chain collaboration and sustainability was sparked during my last position, where I was responsible for the strategic Fresh chains.
At Albert Heijn I have always been given plenty of opportunities to grow and develop. These experiences have had a great influence on me, and I look back on them with great appreciation.
"I am passionate about bringing value chain partners together to collaboratively address the biggest challenges in the food transition."
Annemarie Geerdes, Head of Food
What made you decide to take the step towards consulting after 18 years?
After 18 years of working with great pleasure at Albert Heijn, I felt the need to follow my own path and explore new possibilities. Consultancy fitted in well with this, because it offers me the opportunity to work with many different people and organizations in a short period of time, which always offers new perspectives and challenges.
Why did you choose us?
Been Management Consulting's focus on impact really appeals to me. After more than 20 years of experience in the food sector, I find it important to make food chains more transparent and to implement sustainable improvements in social and ecological areas. We cannot expect consumers to make sustainable choices if the real differences between products are not clear.
Been's slogan, "Let's Change the System", gives me a lot of energy and motivates me.
What are your first impressions of the past few months?
In my first few months, I’ve had numerous conversations with leaders in the Agri-food chain. Many companies are still struggling to address social and ecological themes and are concerned about their business model. This is understandable, as the margins within the Agri-food sector are often not very high. Still, there are plenty of opportunities to get started. By preventing waste of packaging, water, and food, CO2e emissions and costs can be reduced. Additionally, there is an increasing demand for solutions to lower CO2e emissions. This presents an opportunity for value creation. Changes in the agri-food sector are happening faster than ever, and sustainability will have a major influence on future businessmodels. It is important that companies are aware of this.
What can we expect from you here at Been MC and what is your vision on the food transition?
In my role as Head of Food at Been MC, I am focused on bringing companies together to address the most pressing challenges in the food transition. By leveraging my knowledge and network in Agri-Food, combined with the wealth of experience in strategy development and change management at Been MC, I am confident that we can provide strong support to companies in their transition to a future-proof businessmodel.
What special talent do you bring to Been?
I am strong in idea generation, but at the same time, I am also performance-driven and action-oriented. This translates into concrete plans to accelerate the food transition.
